About BreedPicks
BreedPicks is an independent dog product review site that ranks products by how well they fit a specific breed’s traits — not by what’s popular or what brands pay us to promote.
Why BreedPicks exists
Every “best dog food” or “best dog bed” guide we read treated all dogs the same. A French Bulldog with a flat face and sensitive stomach was being recommended the same kibble as a high-drive Labrador. That made no sense to us — breed traits like jaw shape, energy level, joint risk, and coat type genuinely change which product fits.
BreedPicks started as a side project to answer one question: for a given breed, which products actually match what that dog needs? We built a trait-matching system that scores every product against a breed’s specific profile, then wrote deep-dive reviews for the combinations that matter most.
We don’t claim to be veterinarians, and we don’t run hands-on tests with live dogs. Instead, we cite published veterinary research, breed club health data, and regulatory guidance (FDA, AAFCO, AKC) to explain why certain products fit certain breeds. Our job is to translate that public knowledge into practical buying decisions — not to replace professional veterinary advice.
How we rank products
Every product in our database is tagged with the breed traits it suits — for example, a memory-foam bed might be tagged for joint-issues and large-breed, while a pressure-activated cooling mat is tagged for flat-faced dogs who overheat.
Each guide is built in two layers:
- 1. Trait-matching algorithm. We score every product by how many of its suited-for traits overlap with the breed’s profile, then break ties by aggregate rating and review volume. This produces a baseline ranking that’s objective and reproducible.
- 2. Editorial deep-dive (for priority breeds). For high-traffic combinations we write deep-dive reviews that analyze ingredient panels, product specifications, and published veterinary research. Each review cites real, publicly available sources (AAFCO, FDA, AKC, Merck Veterinary Manual, peer-reviewed studies) rather than anecdotal testing claims.
Product data (ASINs, prices, ratings, images) is sourced from Amazon and snapshotted at the time of collection. Prices and ratings change over time — always verify the current price on Amazon before buying.
How we make money
How we make money: BreedPicks earns a commission when you buy through our Amazon links, at no extra cost to you. This is our only revenue source.
How we don’t: We don’t accept free products, paid placements, or sponsorships. A brand cannot pay to be ranked higher — our rankings are based solely on how well each product fits a breed’s traits, according to publicly available data and published veterinary research.
We are a participant in the Amazon Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by linking to Amazon.com.
